How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the wattage from the appliance’s rating sticker and how long you use it.
  2. Replace the sample rate with yours: total bill ÷ kWh used.

How it’s computed

kWh per day = watts × units × hours per day ÷ 1,000.

Monthly cost = kWh per day × days per month × rate per kWh.

Example

At a sample rate of ₱12.00 per kWh:

  • A 150 W refrigerator plugged in all day, with its compressor running about 40% of the time, uses about 43.2 kWh, or ₱518.40 a month.
  • A 60 W electric fan used 8 hours a day uses 14.4 kWh, or ₱172.80 a month.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find my rate per kWh?

On your electric bill, divide the total amount due for the month by the kWh consumed. This gives an all-in rate that includes generation, transmission, distribution, taxes and other charges. Sample rate only. Utility rates change every month; divide the total on your bill by the kWh used to get your real rate.

Where do I find an appliance’s wattage?

Look at the rating sticker or nameplate, usually at the back or bottom, or in the manual. If it lists amperes instead, multiply amps by 220 volts for an approximate wattage.

Why is my ref’s actual cost lower than this estimate?

Refrigerators and aircons cycle on and off, so they don’t draw their rated wattage all the time. Use the energy label’s kWh per year when available, or the Aircon Electricity Calculator, which lets you set the running load.

Do appliances use electricity on standby?

Yes, usually 1 to 5 watts each for TVs, sound systems, chargers and microwaves with clocks. Small, but it adds up over a month across many devices.
